Who we are
About Tap Water Is Safe
Tap Water Is Safe answers one deceptively simple question — can I drink the tap water here? — for every country in the world, all 50 US states, and every French région. Each place gets a clear 0–100 score and a plain-language verdict, so you can decide in seconds whether to drink from the tap, filter, or reach for bottled water.
What we do
We turn official, government-grade drinking-water data into something anyone can read at a glance. Instead of digging through regulatory PDFs, you get an interactive globe, a searchable index, and a scored page for each place covering the essentials: drinking, brushing your teeth, ice, and cooking — plus the treatment and infrastructure behind the tap.
Where our data comes from
- Countries — WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) “safely managed drinking water” data, blended with a traveler-drinkability assessment.
- US states — the US EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS), scored on population-weighted health-based compliance.
- French régions — France’s official Hub’Eau “contrôle sanitaire” drinking-water quality monitoring.
Every score links back to its source, and our full methodology explains exactly how each number is built — and what it does and doesn’t mean.
Independent, and honest about limits
We’re an independent project, not affiliated with any government agency or water utility. Our scores are estimates for general guidance, not laboratory readings and not medical advice. Water quality varies by city, building, plumbing, and season — when in doubt, filter, boil, or choose bottled water. See our disclaimer for the full picture.
